From our first project in 1977 to our evolution as an employee-owned company, Erland’s history has been shaped by trusted relationships, steady leadership, and a commitment to doing the right thing—for our clients, our people, and our communities.
Let's Work Together
Erland Construction, Inc. was founded with Kenneth Froeberg serving as President, employing 12 team members and completing $5 million in work.

The first advanced technology project was completed for Applicon in Burlington, MA.
Revenue grew to $70 million, with the completion of the first residential project—The School House Condominiums in Boston (1980)—followed by the first senior living project, Carleton-Willard Village in Bedford (1982), and the first academic project, Boston University School of Education renovations (1982).

Following the passing of Kenneth Froeberg, Bob McDonald became President.

The portfolio expanded to include clients such as DEC, GTE, Bose, Wang, M/A-COM, H.C. Stark, Putnam Investments, Babson College, and MIT, along with continued work with Nordblom Company.

Steve McDonald became President, and Tom Blesso and Chuck Vaciliou were named Division Managers.

The first LEED Gold project was completed for the EPA in Chelmsford in 2002, and a second office opened in Connecticut in 2008.

The first high-rise project, Summer House in Stamford, CT, was completed, and the Erland Charitable Foundation was established.

Erland celebrates 40 years.

The company became an employee-owned organization.

Sean McDonald was appointed President, and Steve McDonald was appointed CEO.

Erland was founded in 1977 under the leadership of Kenneth Erland Froeberg, who saw an opportunity to bring cost-effective, high-quality construction solutions to the suburban marketplace. His belief in honest communication, practical problem-solving, and long-term relationships laid the foundation for the company we are today.
One of Erland’s earliest partnerships—with Nordblom—set the tone for how we approach every relationship. Together, we helped transform Northwest Park into a thriving office and R&D destination. Decades later, that partnership endures, a testament to the trust and collaboration that define our work.
Leadership transitioned after Kenneth’s passing in 1983, first to Bob McDonald, then to Steve McDonald, and now to Sean McDonald, marking three generations of continuous leadership committed to our founding values. Each chapter expanded our capabilities, deepened our expertise, and strengthened our culture.
In 2022, Erland became an employee-owned company, ensuring every team member has a personal stake in our success. Ownership amplified our culture of accountability, collaboration, and pride—cementing the idea that when our people grow, our company grows.
Through every milestone, one thing has remained constant:
We treat our clients, employees, and trade partners like family—building trust through collaboration and doing what’s right.
This philosophy has guided us since our inception and will continue to shape our next chapter.
