To satisfy their growing need for housing, Babson hired Erland to construct this steel-framed, curved, 5-story building set into a hillside. The new dormitory accommodates 124 students in 31 apartment-style units, each containing four bedrooms, a bathroom, a living room and a kitchenette. The building features student lounges, a lobby and a twobedroom apartment for the Resident Director. It incorporates a 4-pipe HVAC system. During construction, students– used to cutting across the job’s location–had to be rerouted around the site, making safety a key factor. The building, set deep inside the Babson campus, required utilities be brought in from a nearby street and a chiller line be laid from the school’s central cooling plant. In spite of the aggressive schedule and many unforeseen challenges, Erland was able to complete the project in just 11 months. Final cost was $200/sf. We returned significant savings to the Owner.
