EMD Serono Horizon Building

Owner: EMD Serono

Billerica, MA

EMD Serono selected Erland to construct a 149,000sf mixed-use building on their growing campus. The addition of this amenity-focused, WELL Certified™ Platinum, and LEED Gold Certified building created a more vibrant workplace environment for EMD Serono’s exceptional employees. The new building includes lab and office space, a cafe/kitchen/servery, meeting rooms, and concourses. The office space highlights collaboration with its completely open layout. Each lab was designed with flexibility in mind; setting up the infrastructure to adapt to future research and development needs. The overall new environment will shape the advancement of specialty pharmaceuticals and patient care provided by EMD Serono. In addition, the building places an emphasis on sustainability. It was designed and constructed to meet LEED green building standards. The building is made up of 16.9% of sustainable materials, and 89.09% of materials used to construct the facility were recycled. Extensive coordination between our in-house team and the Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) was required given the proximity of the jobsite to one of EMD Serono’s active office buildings. The project team worked closely with the campus facilities team to maintain access and minimize disruption to the adjacent buildings.
