McCarthy Dining Commons at Framingham State University

Owner: Massachusetts State College Building Authority

Framingham, MA

Erland performed both preconstruction and construction services for the expansion and renovation of the McCarthy Dining Hall at Framingham State University. Teaming with designer Symmes Maini & McKee Associates of Cambridge and Owner’s Representative C3 of Boston, Erland executed this work over a summer period when campus demands were lessened. The 5,500sf addition significantly expanded capacity for FSU’s existing dining hall – adding approximately 200 new seats. Our team proposed a creative alternative to the original design study — one that maximized natural light within the dining hall, filled the site with interesting geometry, and sets the stage for another easy expansion in the future. The school utilizes this new space for functions and large gatherings, as well as for student dining. Renovations included installing all new equipment in the existing kitchen. The McCarthy Dining Hall was also constructed to be handicap accessible.
