Erland returned to the Newton Country Day School of the Sacred Heart campus to construct the Kathleen R. Martin Wellness Center. The new structure is built into a hillside adjacent to the school’s playing fields, which required both blasting and the construction of retaining walls through soil nailing. A site drainage system was also required. This site is closely bordered by a residential neighborhood. Several accommodations were made to limit disruptions to the neighbors’ right of quiet enjoyment. The 4-story Wellness Center includes a gymnasium, squash courts, indoor practice rowing facility, dance studio, fitness room, locker rooms, training rooms, and classrooms.
