EMD Serono selected Erland, PM Group, and BR+A Consulting Engineers to renovate 15,000sf of space within the Bourne Building. The Artificial Intelligence Drug Discovery (AIDD) Lab was outfitted with fully automated equipment and cutting-edge technology that allows operations to be controlled remotely. Once completed, EMD Serono will be able to perform life-changing research, schedule workflows, and manage scientific data locally and worldwide. The space required a significant electrical and connectivity upgrade to operate the automated equipment and technology. Erland also overhauled the existing mechanicals, HVAC, and plumbing systems to accommodate the new lab’s layout. New ductwork, fume hoods, and sinks were installed. In addition to the renovation, Erland converted a section of existing lab space into a temporary dry lab area that was used to build and stage the automation equipment. Off-hours work during demolition was required to minimize disruption to EMD Serono’s ongoing operations. This was Erland’s eleventh project with EMD Serono.
